Reading Numbers, Place Value, Decomposition, and Ordering
Place Value
Ones 1
Tens 10
Hundreds 100
Thousands 1,000
Ten Thousands 10,000
Hundred Thousands 100,000
Millions 1,000,000
How are numbers read? Example:
3,450,278
👉 three million four hundred fifty thousand two hundred seventy-eight
Let’s separate the numbers into their place values.
Example:
5,204,613
= 5,000,000 + 200,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 10 + 3
or
= (5 × 1,000,000) + (2 × 100,000) + (4 × 1,000) + (6 × 100) + (1 × 10) + (3 × 1)
Let’s compare the numbers.
Example:
• 2,345,000
• 3,120,000
👉 3,120,000 is larger because 3 million > 2 million
7,326,451
👉 seven million three hundred twenty-six thousand four hundred fifty-one
Separate them like this:
• 7 → million
• 326 → thousand
• 451 → ones
