About the Magic Square Game

Magic Square is a classic puzzle game based on mathematical intelligence and strategy. This version is based on the traditional 3×3 “Magic Square” setup, which is the most well-known format.

Objective of the Game

The goal is to place the numbers 1 through 9 into a 3×3 grid, using each number exactly once. To succeed, the following conditions must be met:

  • Horizontal Sums: The sum of each of the three rows must be 15.

  • Vertical Sums: The sum of each of the three columns must be 15.

  • Diagonal Sums: The sum of both diagonals extending from corner to corner must be 15.

Mathematical Background

In a magic square, the sum of all numbers used (1+2+3…+9 = 45) divided by the number of rows (3) results in a value called the Magic Constant. In this game, the magic constant is 15.

Key Rules and Strategies

  1. The Center Number: In a 3×3 magic square, the center cell must always be 5. This is because 5 is the median of the number sequence and participates in the most sum combinations (horizontal, vertical, and both diagonals).

  2. Even Numbers: Placing even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) in the corner cells usually makes the solution easier to find.

  3. Odd Numbers: Odd numbers (1, 3, 7, 9) are typically placed in the middle edge cells.

How to Play

  • Selection: Click on an empty cell on the grid. The selected cell will be highlighted.

  • Placement: Click a number from the “Available Numbers” panel at the bottom to place it in your selected cell.

  • Editing: If you want to change or delete a number, simply click on the cell containing that number again. The number will return to the available pool.

  • Monitoring: Use the “Status Panel” to check your row, column, and diagonal sums in real-time to refine your strategy.

  • Winning: Once all cells are filled and all sums reach 15, the game is automatically completed, and a congratulatory message is displayed.

Every row, column & diagonal sum = 15

Place numbers 1-9 in the grid so that each row, column, and diagonal adds up to exactly 15
